Discovery Place Volunteer Intern

Discovery Place Science museum is a children’s museum in uptown Charlotte. There they have various departments such as human biology (Explore More Me Labs), design workshop (Thinker Space), biodiversity (Explore More Life), non-living archives (Explore More Collections), and finally, hands-on STEM learning at the Explore More Future labs.

I was selected through a competitive process to the The Explore More Future labs, where I facilitated numerous experiments and activities. Every month or so the lab changes their theme, ranging from chemistry, nanotechnology, energy, engineering, and so much more. I learned so much through my internship, things like how to measure tensile strength of various strings, P.H chemistry experiments, how to handle dry ice, U.V. radiation, 3D printing, and other technology. I really enjoy my time there and would recommend you to visit, even adults can learn from here!

After over a year of being an “apprentice” volunteer I moved up to the S.T.E.M. Intern Position where I led other volunteers in my lab and newcomers. I even got to lead orientation for new volunteers, showing them around the museum and how to interact with visitors!
